Question: Hi Rob! It’s warming up outside and I want to start exercising more. I’d like to track my fitness progress, but high-quality wearables are expensive. Can I use my FSA or HAS funds to buy one?

Rob’s Answer: This is a popular question! According to IRS Publication 502, for an item to be eligible for reimbursement, it must alleviate or prevent a physical or mental illness or disability.

Because smartwatches and rings are typically considered “general health” or lifestyle devices, they aren’t automatically covered. However, there is a way! If your doctor provides a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) stating the device is required to manage a specific condition—such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, or a sleep disorder—it may become eligible for reimbursement. 🩺

Your LMN should clearly include:

  • A Diagnosis: (e.g., Hypertension or Obesity).
  • The Purpose: How the device supports your treatment (e.g., monitoring heart rate or activity levels).
  • The Necessity: Why this specific device is an essential part of your medical plan.

Commonly covered devices (with an LMN):

  • ⌚ Smartwatches: Apple Watch, Google Pixel Watch, Samsung Galaxy, Fitbit Sense.
  • šŸ’ Smart Rings: Oura Ring, Samsung Galaxy Ring.
  • šŸƒ Fitness Bands: WHOOP, Fitbit Charge, and other popular trackers.

Rob’s Practical Steps to Getting Reimbursed:

  1. Consult your doctor: Secure your LMN from a licensed clinician.
  2. Verify your specific plan: Some employers or insurers have unique requirements or specific excluded brands.
  3. Purchase & File: Buy your device and submit the claim through your FSA/HSA portal.
  4. Save Everything: Keep your LMN and your itemized receipt in a safe place in case of a claim review!
